Binning

The "binning" is a sorting process to characterize the classification of the colors and luminous flux during the manufacture of the LEDs.

Manufacturers dedicated to providing high quality use a very strict selection to reduce differences on a given selection.

Candle (light intensity)

Unit of measurement of light intensity or luminance.

COB (or MCOB)

« (Multi) Chips on Board ». This new micro LED technology mounted on printed circuit offers better cooling (and therefore better luminous efficiency).

CQS

Color Quality Scale - Quality of the color spectrum, that is to say a better visual apprehension and color fidelity.

Fitting for a lamp

Base of a light bulb for the connection with the sleeve. It exists 3 kinds of pellets : small screw E14, large screw E27, with bayonet B22

socket

Accessory that provides electrical contact with the lamp of the receiving device.

Driver / LED Transformer

Used to convert the AC voltage to a continuous and stable voltage. The use of LED transformer must be exclusively for the feeding of LED lighting products. A quality transformer will be "no flicking".

Lifetime (a lamp or luminaire)

Time during which a lamp worked before being out of service or considered as such according to specified criteria. The lifetime of a lamp or lighting is usually expressed in hours.

luminous efficiency (lumen par watt : lm/W) (or Power Factor)

The luminous efficiency or power factor is defined by the ratio of luminous flux (expressed in lumens) and energy flow (Exprime a paler). An LED lamp will light quality effectiveness 80 lm/W minimum

Luminous flow

This is the amount of light emitted by a light source by second. It is measured in lumens.

Flicking

It can be defined as "light flicker". Concretely, if you take your phone and take a picture, you have lines that appear when you view the screen, or, another example : interference in the radio. This is related to the transformation of alternating electric current (output jack your example) dc (necessary to LED technology). If you have a quality transformer you will have neither radio interference nor oscillations on your screen.

Light intensity

It is the measure of the amount of light emitted by a source and a second on a given surface. It is expressed in candela.

IP (Protection sign)

The IP index expresses the degree of protection against ingress of solid bodies (dust and water e.g.). Outdoor light fixtures must be at least IP65.

IRC (I ra) : Color Rendering Index

Capacity of a lamp to faithfully reproduce colors as they appear in natural light. The maximum is 100. The mandatory minimum is 80.

some landmarks :

– Index > 90 : excellent color rendering

– 80 < index < 90 : good record

– 70 < index < 80 : made just acceptable

Attention, IRC is less suited to LED to traditional lighting: it should always look rendering in real conditions.

Kelvin (degré kelvin)

Unit for measuring the color temperature (k)

We can distinguish 3 Color families :

2800-3500° k corresponds to a color "Warm White"

4000-4500° k corresponds to a color "Daylight- natural white "

5000-6500° k corresponds to a color verging on "Cool White"

Lumen (lm)

Unit for measuring the luminous flux. The ratio between the power consumed relative to the light emitted is expressed in lumens per watt (lm/W), it's'luminous efficiency.

Lux (lx)

Unit for measuring the luminous flux illuminating a surface.

For example :

  • Workplace 500 : Lux
  • Meeting room 500 : Lux
  • Reception, entrance hall : 300 Lux
  • Circulations : 100 Lux

Power

The power absorbed (or consumed) is measured in watts (W), is the amount of energy consumed by the lamp and its equipment.

Quality (LED lighting)

LED lighting quality will have the following properties :

  • an IRC>80 Ra>0,
  • Power factor >0,9,
  • A color temperature (expressed in Kelvin) at + or - 5% that chosen,
  • 80 lm / watt seems today to a minimum performance product,
  • No flicking,
  • Meets cautions from the ANSES (National Agency safety of food, environmental and labor),
  • A standard exchange warranty : replacement or repair of the light source down.

LED Recycling

LED lighting unserviceable are classified as waste WEEE (electronic waste).

An LED lamp is almost completely recyclable. His main interest, facing a compact fluorescent bulb, is that it does not contain mercury, or fluorescent powder.

They can therefore be reported at merchants, in supermarkets, in DIY stores, from wholesalers, into a collection cabinet "free access" (as for batteries), or in waste.

RGB (RVB)

Red, Green, Blue. Base Color Mode descriptions for mixtures: Rouge, Vert, Bleu.

Semiconductor

The electrical conductivity of a semiconductor is intermediate between those of metals (good drivers) and that of insulators.

Silicon is the semiconductor material most commonly used commercially, because of its good properties, its natural abundance and its economic cost implementation. However, we can mention some other : le germanium, gallium arsenide or silicon carbide.

SMD

Surface Mounted Device. This is a LED component mounted on PCB ready to use. better cooling.

Color temperature (Kelvin (K))

Is the apparent color of a light source measured in Kelvin. The color temperature permits the classification of the lamps :

  • warm light (in orange dominant) < 3000K,
  • intermediate lumen = 4000K,
  • cold light (predominantly blue) > 5000K.

Tension

It is measured in volts, the mains voltage is 230V AC about in France.

Transformer

Device that changes the voltage of the electrical circuit. In the case of LED is the device that converts alternating current into direct current.

Very low voltage

This is a voltage lower than 50V, for example the output of a transformer.

dimmer

Device for varying the luminous flux of a lighting unit.

Watt (W)

electric power unit. The power consumed for a period represents the energy used. In the case of LEDs is often referred to lm / W, that is to say the luminous flux measured by the power consumed electric.
